About One Million Family Dinners
The students of Union Park Middle School in Orlando and The Kimball Companies would like you and your family to come to dinner… and we'll keep counting until we reach ONE MILLION FAMILY DINNERS!
On Tuesday, March 22, 2011, from their school cafeteria, these Union Park Middle School students challenged one million families to do something simple in concept, but profound in impact - sit down and have a conversation around the dinner table, as a family. These kids learned that there’s no better way to nourish and grow a family than time together, and they are now asking one million families to eat together, by setting their challenge to Florida and the nation.
Their idea for ONE MILLION FAMILY DINNERS was born out of a successful pilot program that answered the students’ cry for more parental involvement – School House to Your House (www.SH2YH.com). This Kimball Companies’ program addressed topics in the classroom that the students then took home as character-building conversation starters to be discussed over a dinner – together, as a family. The feeling of being empowered, heard, understood, and in turn better connecting with and understanding their parents and siblings came back into the classroom like a bolt of lightning.
We expect ONE MILLION FAMILY DINNERS to:
· Encourage eating healthier meals
· Promote family communication
· Inspire planned family time together
· Start discussions about family meals in the press and within social media outlets
· Institute a “Tech-free Zone” for family meals
· Share Character Enrichment information with children
· Connect schools and families more closely (through content provided by School House To Your House)
· Increase parental involvement in schools
· Decrease bullying, drug/alcohol use, and obesity, and
· Increase scholastic performance
ONE MILLION FAMILY DINNERS is just the beginning of a true "family movement," and we look forward to your family joining us!
