My Family Counts

April 3, 2011:  Social Media works for Families, too...

One of the greatest discoveries we've had since launching OneMillionFamilyDinners.com is the huge number of people "out there" who agree with our mission to encourage families to have dinners together.

We've been posting on our Facebook page and "tweeting" @1MilFamDinners and the responses have been amazing.  Looks like a lot of families already understand how important dinners together are -- but that still leaves a few families left unconvinced.

That's why we need your help.  Please tell your FB friends (and real-life friends) about our goal to bring 1,000,000 families together for dinner!  Post something about us on your wall.. or RT one of our tweets!

March 22, 2011: The Power of Family Dinners...

Congratulations on registering your family for One Million Family Dinners, and your commitment to making your family stronger!

A few years ago my husband Neal and I felt ourselves and our four children drifting away from each other, and becoming more disconnected with each passing day. The pressures of being on the road for his big-time corporate job kept Neal just a little distant from the rest of the family, and I was beginning to feel like I was essentially a single parent.
My kids were drifting away, too, as they were getting older and getting more and more caught up in extra-curricular activities at school, and music lessons and sports teams… we just felt like they were becoming more disconnected from each other with every passing day.
The main problem was that my husband and I were spending so much time and energy on being the perfect providers for our family that we almost forgot how to BE a family.
All of that changed when we realized that the one big thing that was absent from our lives that had been a cornerstone of the family when we were kids was the simple family dinner. That sort of “and how was your day?” conversation around a pot roast that had kept everything together back in our own childhood.
But that sort of family meal just wasn’t possible with our schedules. So we decided to commit to eating AT LEAST one family meal together a week, and very soon we all learned about the power of family dinners.

The results for our four children have been tremendous (as a Mom, I feel obligated to brag about my daughter the Presidential Scholar, my daughter who volunteered hundreds of hours to win her school’s community service award, and my two Eagle Scout sons…), and I know the time you spend with your family will not only strengthen your family bonds, it will also help your children achieve all they possibly can.
Congratulations again for choosing to join together around your family table, and thank you for sharing your experiences with OneMillionFamilyDinners! We look forward to being a part of your ongoing family conversation.
To your family success,

Jill Kimball
