What did you talk about and what happened?
The highlight of my dinner last night was cooking it! My 4 & 5 year old boys "helped" me with every step. We made breakfast for dinner, one of our weekly traditions. First, the 5 year old poured the water in the pancake batter & mixed the batter. He tried MANY times to reach his hand in the bowl to eat the powder & goop created when mixing it together. After pouring the pancake batter on the grittle, we started the eggs. This is when my four year old ran into the room shouting, "I want to go first!" He climbed on the chair positioned by the counter & pushed the five year old off the chair. The five year old began to yell, "No I get to go first!" This prompted a discussion about being patient and taking turns. So, with both boys on the chair, we took turns cracking the eggs...3 each. The five year old wanted to crush the eggs with one hand, which meant I was pulling shells out of the goopey mess. After successfully cracking the eggs and cleaning our hands, the kids watched me cook the eggs and asked, "Why does it look so gross?" Thankfully, they still ate every last morsel of it! Yum!
What did you learn about each other?
I learned that my children love to help! The five year old in particular is very interested in every step of cooking. I am going to involve him more as I cook. In fact, just this morning, he helped me squeeze the barbeque sauce on our pork tenderloin in the crockpot before school! We also learned how important it is to take turns and not always want to be first. Well, I wish they learned that. I'm sure I'll have to go over that lesson at least 100 more times before it sinks in.

With 5 children and working full time,I treasure the dinners we can share as a family- Due to sports and other activities, we do not eat together all of the time..But when we do, we make try to make it count. I am looking forward to using our SH2YH placemat to stimulate conversation and learn more about each other through our conversations.

Our kida are all older now, and off to college. We all got together over their break and eat on vacation! Because we have always valued the time around the table, our meals together are always wonderful. This is at a restaurant on vacation!

We eat family meals together regularly. I am the author of The Table Experience, Discover What Creates Deeper More Meaningful Relationships. I blended academic research and biblical research explaining why it matters to eat meals at a table, eye to eye, face to face. Just talking regardless of the topic stabilizes the human soul. We always ask about each other's day, eat healthy, drink water with citrus, and only occasionally have dessert.

Every day my daughter comes home and tells me how there's always someone that steals her stuff and her friends and teachers don't do anything about it. It's good to have fam time, but the things we find out aren't even funny....
